Skin Cancer Prevention

Not all types of cancer can be successfully prevented. However, this is not applicable to skin cancer. It has been estimated that over 65% of all cases are caused by regular exposure to the sun. Its UV rays affect the skin cells and they grown into tumor ones. The good news is that you can reduce your risk of suffering from this condition by adopting some simple yet effective prevention methods.

Your main aim should be to reduce your exposure to the sun during the hours of the day which have the most active UV radiation. The sun is most active between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. It is best to avoid going out during this time of the day.

Applying sunscreen on your skin is one of the most effective ways for skin cancer prevention. The sun protection factor, SPF factor, of the product you use should be over 15. In general, the higher it is the better. Most physicians actually recommend using a product with a higher SPF factor, if you are at high altitudes.

You should apply the lotion or cream on all areas of your skin that are not covered by clothing. Keep in mind that the sun's UV radiation is strong even during cloudy days. That is why it is essential for you to apply sunscreen every time you go out, irrespective of the season. It is important to apply the lotion or cream regularly, during constant exposure to the sun, especially if you are swimming, playing or relaxing in the water.
Wearing protective clothing is an essential part of skin cancer protection and prevention. Your clothes should cover your shoulders and arms as well as your entire body and legs. It is a good idea for you to wear a hat with a wide brim that can protect your face and your ears and neck. The more tightly woven the fabric is the better. It is best for it to be light colored and breathable.

Avoid sunbathing, tanning beds and the use of sunlamps. It is perfectly natural for you to want an attractive tan, but you should consider other ways for obtaining it. It is now known that the artificial sources of UV radiation are equally harmful.

Regular screening is an extremely effective form of skin cancer prevention. You can readily examine your skin on your own. You should also have your physician do it during regular check ups.
